Prof. Dr. Bernd Krieg-Brückner is head of the safe and secure cognitive systems research group
of DFKI and since 1987 Full Professor for Programming Languages, Compilers and Software
Technology. He was Professor at Berkley, research associate in Stanford and TU Munich and
DAAD Scholar at Cornell where he got his MSc in 1971. He studied in Erlangen and Hanover and
got his PhD from TU Munich in 1978. The research in his group focuses on the development of
safe and secure, cognitively adequate technical systems. This research covers the whole spectrum
from foundations up to tool and systems development, and is structured in three areas: formal
technologies, safe and secure system, and cognitive systems. In collaboration with the University
of Bremen, his group also operates the Bremen Ambient Assisted Living Lab (BAALL), which is
an apartment suitable for the elderly and people with physical or cognitive impairments. With a
size of 60 m!, it comprises all necessary conditions for trial living, intended for two persons.
BAALL has been developed in the EU project SHARE-it and the SFB/TR8 Spatial Cognition of
the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft.
