Information: Prof. Dr. Otthein Herzog is member of the board of acatech and was until late 2009 the head of
the Artificial Intelligence Research Group, which he built up when he was appointed as a full
professor to the Computer Science Department of the University of Bremen in 1993. Before he
joined academia, he worked in industrial software development and research with IBM for 16
years, where he collected extensive know-how in many international software product
development and numerous AI research projects, including operating systems (DOS/VSE), natural
language processing and text understanding (LILOG), information retrieval (IBM SearchManager),
CIM software systems, and environmental impact analysis (EXCEPT).
The AI Research Group is fully integrated in the "TZI - Center for Computing and
Communication Technologies" of the University of Bremen, which was founded by Dr. Herzog in
1995 and directed until 2009, which is devoted to the technology development and transfer in the
areas of Mobile Computing, Intelligent Systems, and Digital Media.
From March 2000 to February 2002 Dr. Herzog held a position in industry, where many of these
ideas were brought productive reality, leading also to the Best Deployed Application Award
presented at the Conference on Innovative Applications of Artificial Intelligence 2002 by the
American Association for Artificial Intelligence.
From 1998 onwards Dr. Herzog was Affiliated Research Professor in the Machine Learning and
Inference Laboratory (directed by the late Prof. Ryszard Michalski) at George Mason University,
Fairfax, USA.
His research interests include mobile and wearable computing, knowledge management,
multiagent systems, semantics of time and space, and the application of these technologies, e.g., in
logistics, engineering, and multimedia archiving and retrieval. He has published and co-authored
27 book contributions and books and 160 contributions to scientific conferences and journals.
Since 2006, Dr. Herzog is an elected member of acatech - the National Academy of Science and
Engineering, fellow of the German Informatics Society (GI) and member of the Association for
Computing Machinery (ACM).
